Why Liveaboard in Komodo?

Komodo National Park contains some of the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems — over 1,000 species of fish, 260 coral species, manta rays, whale sharks, dolphins, and the famous Komodo dragons on land. The critical difference: the best dive sites in Komodo are only accessible by liveaboard. Day-trip boats from Labuan Bajo can reach 3–4 sites. A liveaboard vessel reaches 15–25 sites over the same period, including remote gems like Gili Banta, Siaba Besar, and the legendary Tatawa Kecil.

Unlike resort-based diving where you return to a hotel each evening, a liveaboard in Komodo keeps you at the dive sites. Wake up at Manta Point. Roll in for a dawn dive at Castle Rock. Drift through a coral garden before breakfast. This is how serious divers and discerning travelers experience Komodo.

Liveaboard Komodo Dive Sites

Our liveaboard itineraries are designed to maximize dive site diversity. Here are the highlights your cruise will include:

Manta Point

Cleaning station where oceanic manta rays gather year-round. Snorkelers and divers both witness close-up manta encounters at 3–12m depth.

Batu Bolong

Pinnacle dive site with a near-vertical wall covered in sea fans. Schooling fish, Napoleon wrasse, and frequent reef shark sightings.

Castle Rock

One of Komodo’s most thrilling drift dives. Strong currents bring schooling barracuda, tuna, trevally, and white-tip reef sharks.

Crystal Rock

Shallower drift dive accessible to all levels. Coral gardens, sea turtles, and sweetlips under a submerged rock formation.

Tatawa Kecil

Remote site only accessible by liveaboard. Famous for huge schools of fish, pygmy seahorses, and pristine soft coral gardens.

Cannibal Rock

Nudibranchs, seahorses, and an absurd density of macro life on a shallow rubble slope — a photographer’s dream site.

Frequently Asked Questions — Komodo Liveaboard

What is the difference between a Komodo liveaboard and a day trip?

A Komodo liveaboard is a private vessel where you sleep onboard for 3–10 nights, diving 3–5 times per day at remote sites. A day trip departs from Labuan Bajo each morning and returns that evening, reaching only 2–4 nearby sites. Liveaboards access sites day-trip boats cannot reach, allow early morning and dusk dives when marine life is most active, and offer a far more immersive experience. Liveaboards are dramatically superior for serious divers and anyone wanting the full Komodo experience.

What dive certification do I need for Komodo liveaboard?

Open Water certification (PADI, SSI, or equivalent) is the minimum required to dive in Komodo. Advanced Open Water is strongly recommended as several Komodo sites have strong currents (Komodo is rated a 3–4/5 on current difficulty). Our dive guides will brief you thoroughly on conditions before each dive and will suggest snorkeling for non-certified guests or on high-current days. Nitrox is available on most of our vessels for extended dive times.

Are Komodo liveaboards suitable for non-divers?

Absolutely. Non-divers and snorkelers love Komodo liveaboards. Komodo’s shallows are spectacular — visibility reaches 20–30m even at snorkel depth. All our liveaboard packages include full snorkeling gear, and our guides take snorkelers to the same manta ray, turtle, and reef shark sites as divers. Land excursions to Komodo Island (dragon trekking), Padar Island (sunrise hike), and Pink Beach are included for all guests regardless of dive certification.

How do I get to Labuan Bajo for a Komodo liveaboard?

Labuan Bajo is served by Komodo Airport (LBJ) with direct flights from Bali (45 min), Jakarta (2h), Lombok (1h), and other Indonesian cities. Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Nam Air, and TransNusa all operate regular services. We recommend arriving one day before your liveaboard departure to allow for any flight delays. We can arrange airport transfers and a pre-trip hotel recommendation in Labuan Bajo.

What is the best time for a Komodo liveaboard?

The best time for a Komodo liveaboard is April to December. Peak season (June–September) offers the best visibility (40m+) and calmest seas, but premium vessels book up fast. Manta ray season is March–May and October–December. Even in the wet season (January–March), our captains use sheltered western sites that remain diveable year-round. We operate liveaboards 365 days per year — contact us to confirm current conditions and availability.
