Dragon Trekking

The world’s largest lizard, on its own ground.

One to three hours on foot with park rangers on Rinca and Komodo Island. Wild animals, wild habitat, and rules that are not decorative.

The short answer

What dragon trekking actually involves

Dragons hunting, nesting and interacting in the wild on Rinca and Komodo. Suits moderate fitness — treks run one to three hours. Season: May–September for drier trekking; dragons present year-round. Equipment: closed hiking shoes, long trousers and sun protection; rangers provided.

What makes it work

Three things that decide it

01

Rangers are mandatory

Every group walks with park rangers. Dragons are fast over short distances and entirely wild — the rules exist for that reason.

02

Rinca has more, Komodo has bigger

Rinca holds over 1,300 dragons with fewer visitors. Loh Liang on Komodo Island is the largest habitat area.

03

Long trail or short

Rangers set the route on the day against heat, group fitness and where the animals are. Both options end at the same place.

Inside the rate

What the day rate already covers

  • Fully crewed private charter
  • All meals and beverages
  • Specialist guide where the activity needs one
  • Equipment listed above
  • Komodo National Park permits
  • Timing planned around tide, light and the day boats

A private charter sets its own hours. Day boats run to a fixed schedule; you do not — which is usually the difference between doing this well and doing it in a queue. Specific inclusions depend on the yacht selected, our charter desk will confirm the full list for your chosen vessel.

Before you commit

Four questions the desk gets weekly

Is it safe?

With rangers, yes — that is what they are for. Stay with the group, no sudden movement, and follow instructions without debate.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderate. One to three hours on uneven ground in heat. The short trail suits most families.

Rinca or Komodo Island?

Rinca for more animals and fewer people; Komodo Island for the largest habitat. Charters of four days or more usually do both.

What should I wear?

Closed shoes, long trousers and a hat. Sandals are refused at the gate, and the ground is not forgiving.

Build it into the charter

Tell the desk this is the priority and how many days you have. The route is planned around it, and the written quote comes back the same day.
