Padar Island

Three bays, three colours, one ridge.

The photograph everyone comes back with is taken from a 370-metre ridge at first light. The climb starts in the dark and the whole park opens at the top.

The short answer

What Padar Island actually is

Sunrise hike to the 370 m summit. Season: April–November, dry season, clearest views. Access: 3 hours from Labuan Bajo, 1 hour from Komodo Island. Allow 2–3 hours ashore, pre-dawn start.

Why it is worth the stop

What makes it worth anchoring for

01

The ridge at first light

Three differently coloured bays visible from a single summit — the reason the island is on every itinerary.

02

Why the pre-dawn start

Haze builds through the morning and the trail bakes by nine. Charters anchor overnight so you climb before the day boats arrive.

03

It is a hike, not a walk

370 metres of loose steps and no shade. Sensible shoes and water; the crew carries both if you ask.

Park entrance and conservation fees are inside the charter rate and re-checked close to sailing — they move, and a stale figure becomes your problem at the gate.

Inside the rate

What the day rate already covers

  • Tender transfer from the yacht
  • Guide or ranger where the site requires one
  • Snorkelling and diving equipment
  • National park entrance and conservation fees
  • Water, shade and reef-safe sunscreen sent ashore
  • Timing planned around tide, light and the day boats

A private charter decides its own hours here. Day boats run to a fixed schedule; you do not, which is usually the difference between an empty site and a crowded one. Specific inclusions depend on the yacht selected, our charter desk will confirm the full list for your chosen vessel.

Before you commit

Four questions the desk gets weekly

How long is the climb?

Around 45 minutes up at a steady pace, less coming down. The steps are loose in places, so shoes matter more than fitness.

When should I go up?

Before sunrise. Anchoring overnight puts you on the ridge ahead of the day boats out of Labuan Bajo — which is the whole advantage of a charter here.

Is there anything to do besides the hike?

The bays below are good swimming and the anchorage is calm. But Padar is a viewpoint first; the diving is better at Batu Bolong and Crystal Rock.

Can children manage it?

Most can, with time. The loose steps near the top are the only real obstacle — plenty of families turn back at the second viewpoint and still get the photograph.

Put it in the itinerary

Tell the desk which stops matter most and how many days you have. The route is built around them, and the written quote comes back the same day.
